  1. One of the Grey Lady's endearing qualities is an absolute absence of irony. Friends cursed with some remaining short-term memory may recall the Times' same completely blinkered call over Hillary. 'The bien-pensant elites?' Is there a mirror in the house?
Even in milder earlier years, FN would reliably take perhaps 12% of the vote, a sad sludge of pied-noirs, anti-Semites and Catholic monarchists. The ossified Communist Mélenchon, would probably be guaranteed the traditional ration of support, but industrial labor has been successfully woo'd by Le Pen, something unthinkable in the past. Just as exurban resentments festered under Obama, largely unobserved, so has France soured under Hollande. Amusez-vous bien les enfants.
